About:Katherine J. Stefanelli, PHD, LPC, NCC is an Assistant Professor in the Counseling and Human Services Department at the University of Scranton, Scranton, PA. Her work over the last 25 years includes clinical service in both the private sector and educational settings. Dr. Stefanelli is a core faculty member in the undergraduate counseling and human service program while also instructing at the graduate level. In her former positions as Penn State Scranton’s Coordinator of Counseling and Psychological Services, she worked to destigmatize mental health issues on college campuses by highlighting prevention and facilitating a robust proactive education calendar; she has also worked in the department of Psychology at Penn State Scranton as an adjunct professor. Her research in mindfulness for stress reduction (particularly for college students) has been promoted in Northeast Pennsylvania school districts; and, she has received wellness grants to administer collegiate wellness programming in the areas of mindfulness and self-care. Dr. Stefanelli has published works pertaining to ethical and diversity-focused fieldwork and service learning for human service professionals as well as in mindfulness for stress reduction and improved mental health related quality of life in college students. Dr. Stefanelli is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a National Board-Certified Counselor, and a Certified Educational Specialist. She holds a doctoral degree in Human Development from Marywood University where she also earned both her master’s degree in clinical psychology and post-master’s certification in school counseling. She earned a B.A. in Psychology at Penn State University, where she also served as a research assistant at The Pennsylvania State University Child Study Center. She is also a passionate animal rights advocate and belongs to several non-profit organizations which support animal welfare and the rights of all sentient beings.
