Black communities continue to experience disparities in substance use treatment engagement and access. These inequities may be partly rooted in the enduring impacts on the War on Drugs. This session explores the relevance of structural competency as a guiding framework for mental health counselors to better conceptualize and address the systemic factors contributing to substance use treatment access in Black populations. While this presentation is grounded in substance use treatment, the structural competency framework expands upon counselor's leadership and clinical application skills to meet systemic needs with systemic solutions with variety of clinical populations.
