Did you ever have a client who could beautifully explain their trauma, has all the insight in the world, and is still completely dysregulated? That’s not resistance. That’s their nervous system. When trauma lives in the body, healing must involve the body.
This experiential session introduces counselors to the integration of somatic therapy and Polyvagal Theory as powerful tools for trauma-responsive and regulation-focused care. While traditional talk therapy emphasizes cognitive insight, emerging neuroscience highlights the critical role of the body in processing and resolving distress. Participants will explore how nervous system states shape client experiences, behaviors, and therapeutic engagement.
Grounded in the work of Stephen Porges and Pat Ogden, this session will bridge theory and practice by translating complex neurophysiological concepts into accessible, clinically applicable interventions. Attendees will learn how to recognize autonomic states in session, support regulation, and incorporate body-based strategies to enhance safety, connection, and healing.
The workshop will conclude with practical, ready-to-use somatic interventions that clinicians can immediately integrate into their work with clients across diverse settings.
