“Just wait until they find out I have no idea what I am doing”: An open discussion about imposter phenomenon among counselors and emerging leaders

Imposter phenomenon (IP), which is described as a feeling of professional fraudulence, is a common experience of novice and experienced counselors, supervisors, counselor educators, and leaders within the counseling profession. This has a profound impact on an individual’s professional identity development, career satisfaction, and sense of belonging. Despite this commonplace experience within our field, there continues to be hesitancy and stigma associated with sharing imposter feelings. 
This session aims to engage in a discussion with fellow counselors-in-training and professional counselors as we seek to lessen the burden of imposter phenomenon. Whether you are a counseling student with limited clinical experience or a seasoned professional, this roundtable discussion will raise personal awareness of this phenomenon. Due to a lack of sufficient research, this roundtable serves to inform future direction of mitigation of imposter phenomenon among helpers and leaders in our field.
