Reentry, Equity, and Healing: Supporting Justice-Involved Youth Through Counseling Practice

Justice-involved youth experience high rates of mental health needs, trauma exposure, and systemic barriers that can complicate successful community reentry. This session examines reentry as a critical transition point and highlights the evolving role of counselors in supporting youth across systems. Grounded in current research, participants will explore how structural inequities shape outcomes and how trauma-informed and developmentally responsive practices can promote healing and reduce recidivism. Emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary collaboration and continuity of care to better support youth navigating the shift from detention to community, aligning with the counseling profession’s need to adapt to complex and changing client needs.
