We Don't Talk About Trauma Training: What Counselor Educators and Supervisors Need to Know About Preparing Counselors to Treat Trauma (1 CE)

Despite the widespread prevalence of trauma—with up to 70% of the global population experiencing at least one traumatic event—counselors-in-training (CITs) consistently report feeling underprepared to provide trauma counseling services (Benjet et al., 2016; Foster, 2017). Research indicates that only 18% of CITs feel competent to utilize evidence-based trauma interventions, and only 28% feel prepared to counsel child victims (Foster, 2017). Meanwhile, 73.3% of CACREP-accredited programs lack a dedicated trauma course (Mathew et al., 2023). This session presents findings from the first systematic review of trauma training in counselor education, synthesizing 12 peer-reviewed articles published since CACREP first mandated trauma content in 2009.
