Promoting Healing and Resilience among Boys and Men Who Have Been Sexually Assaulted (1.5 CE)

This session will address the widespread yet under-recognized problem of the sexual abuse of boys and sexual assault of men. Data will be summarized, showing that nearly 11% of boys and 25% of men in the U.S. experience sexual victimization, often leading to significant psychological, behavioral, and somatic issues. The presenter will explain how constricted norms of masculinity contribute to shame, under-reporting, and barriers to help-seeking in these populations. A strength-based, recovery-oriented approach to counseling will be described. Key features of this approach include trauma-informed understanding, sensitive therapeutic engagement, evidence-based interventions, family involvement, and ethical practice that can help sexually victimized boys and men to reclaim a sense of personal power, rebuild trust in others, and develop healthier, more flexible models of masculinity.
