Unmasking the Catfish: Key Considerations and Practices when Working with Online Deception in Counseling (1 CE)

Catfishing, or online deception, is an increasingly prevalent presenting problem for individuals in counseling. Online deception is the practice of creating a fabricated personality or exaggerating aspects of one's identity to attract individuals online. Online deception can be used for both romantic and financial gain. This presentation will explore key background information on online deception.  It will explore catfishing from both a theoretical and a social construct, facing our clients.  It will also explore the characteristics of both victims and perpetrators and the impact AI may have on online relationships. Finally, this presentation will present counselors, counselors-in-training, and supervisors with treatment recommendations and practices.
