Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Neurodiverse Adults

Conditions that fall under the umbrella of neurodiversity like autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder come with their own issues and comorbidities. Unfortunately, treatment for these issues like applied behavioral analysis for autistic youth have shown to have harmful lasting effects. To combat this, using therapeutic techniques that are neurodiverse-affirming rather than dismissing or "fixing" show better mental health outcomes and are becoming more recommended by professionals. There is evidence to show that acceptance and commitment therapy can be an effective therapeutic modality for adults with ADHD and autism spectrum disorder and that this modality can also be neurodiverse-affirming. This session aims to provide participants with the knowledge of the issues that neurodiverse people face and how acceptance and commitment therapy can be effective while also affirming the neurodiverse identity.
