58th Annual PCA Conference
Saturday November 7, 2026 9:15am - 10:15am EST
The perinatal period is a time of profound transition and vulnerability, making it a high-risk period for the onset or exacerbation of mental health concerns, especially when unexpected events happen during pregnancy or childbirth. Individuals at increased risk of developing a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder are those who have experienced fertility challenges, perinatal loss, pregnancy and birth complications, and those who have babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. For many, these unexpected events during pregnancy and childbirth can be experienced as trauma. This session offers an overview of perinatal trauma, its impact on individuals and family systems, and trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches for care. Through lecture, case examples and discussion, participants will gain practical strategies to better support clients navigating the often unexpected emotional complexities of the perinatal period.
