Navigating the Complex Journey of Gatekeeping: A Systemic Approach to Supporting Counselor Educators and Clinical Supervisors (1 CE)

Gatekeeping is a complex and essential responsibility for counselor educators and clinical supervisors. While ethical codes and accreditation standards emphasize the importance of ongoing student evaluation, remediation, and, when necessary, dismissal, practical guidance for implementation remains limited. Using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems framework, this session conceptualizes gatekeeping as a dynamic, systemic process influenced by multiple interacting contexts within counselor education and clinical settings. Session attendees will examine common gatekeeping challenges and identify actionable strategies for addressing them across ecological levels. Aligned with the conference theme, this session encourages attendees to reframe gatekeeping as an evolving professional responsibility and to develop leadership approaches that support ethical decision-making amid change and transition.
