Invisible Chains: Mental Health Obstacles to Successful Reentry (1 CE)

The transition from incarceration back into society is a critical and often destabilizing period, particularly for individuals with mental health needs. Despite high rates of diagnosed and undiagnosed mental health conditions among incarcerated populations, access to consistent care during reentry remains severely limited. This presentation examines the barriers that contribute to gaps in mental health support during this transition period. Drawing on current research and case examples, it highlights the consequences of inadequate care—including recidivism, homelessness, and untreated illness—and proposes actionable strategies to improve continuity of care. Attendees will gain insight into the important role that counseling plays to ensure success of reintegration.
