From Awareness to Action: Counseling at the Intersection of Immigration Enforcement Policy and Practice (1.5 CE)

This session examines the impact of expanding immigration policies and enforcement on migrant individual and community wellbeing. Participants will learn about the role counselors can play as advocates in this shifting sociopolitical landscape. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their beliefs and advocacy competencies while gaining insight into the history of U.S. immigration law and current topics, including 287(g) agreements, surveillance, and protective legislation. Using the ACA Code of Ethics and Advocacy Competencies as a foundation, presenters will engage participants in exploring counselors’ ethical responsibility and actionable strategies to support migrants across micro, meso, and macro levels. The session will also introduce resources to assist counselors in their advocacy work while promoting their own mental wellbeing.
