In today’s increasingly diverse and complex sociopolitical landscape, counselors frequently encounter differences in identity, worldview, and lived experiences, which can create tension within therapeutic relationships. This session explores the concept of sociocultural dissonance and its impact on rapport, trust, and clinical effectiveness. Participants will examine how unaddressed cultural differences can contribute to micro-ruptures, misattunement, and premature termination; while also learning practical strategies to foster cultural humility, strengthen therapeutic alliance, and engage in meaningful relational repair. Through case examples and guided reflection, attendees will leave with actionable tools to navigate sociocultural differences with greater confidence, responsiveness, and ethical awareness.
