This presentation examines current literature on the racial and ethnic identity development of transracially adopted children, the socialization practices of their families, and the adverse consequences of inadequate identity development across the lifespan for the adoptees. Through a comprehensive literature review, this presentation aims to bring awareness to how the counselors and counselor educators can better serve this population by also examining potential courses of intervention for this unique population. Further, gaps in the current literature are examined to provide guidance into further research on the development and treatment of transracial adoptees and their families.
