Migration as Meaning: An Existential Approach to Counseling Latin American Immigrants

Latine immigrants experience significant psychological stressors relating to migration like acculturative stress, identity conflicts, and discrimination. Because of these, approaches in mental health services need to be crafted in a way that both honors Latine cultural values and supports the individuals themselves. This session posits existential therapy as a culturally responsive approach for Latines seeking mental health services. Specifically, it will explore the concepts of meaning-making, responsibility, identity development, and authenticity and how those are congruent within traditional Latine culture. The presentation will explore how the existential therapeutic framework can be implemented in sessions with immigrant clients who are facing issues surrounding their relationships, cultural identities, and sense of purpose and meaning.
