A Framework for Counseling Emerging Adults: Results and Implications from a Grounded Theory Study

Emerging adulthood (ages 18–29) represents a critical developmental period with specific mental health  and developmental needs. Counselors often receive limited training on developmentally responsive approaches for working with emerging adult clients. This session presents the  findings from a grounded theory study which developed a framework for working with emerging adult clients. The model highlights establishing safety, validating age normative experiences, providing psychoeducation and processing young adults’ identity development and values. Attendees will learn to apply developmentally informed conceptualizations and counseling techniques that can be integrated into clinical practice with emerging adult clients.
