We all enter the counseling room with our internal working model and presuppositions of systems based on our experiences and history. These inherent biases can be brought into awareness by examining the “ghosts” of our past. Using frameworks from the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies and Spiritual and Religious Competencies, counselors can work through countertransference and working models to identify and examine the origin of our ghosts along with the personal values connected to these perspectives. Through self-awareness and understanding, counselors and supervisors are better able to not allow these ghosts to haunt the counseling room, but instead acknowledge the values provided by experience and past history to name the ghosts and change them from unconscious hindrance to integrating personal narratives that inform clinical work.
