58th Annual PCA Conference
Friday November 6, 2026 2:15pm - 3:15pm EST
College is a time of self-growth and personal exploration. This period of increased independence is also accompanied by stress and uncertainty that can become a source of mental strain, heightened vulnerability, and dematriculation. College counseling centers provide crucial support for students seeking assistance for stress and stress related psychological issues but can become overcome by sheer demand. Stepped-care services such as peer education, group therapy, and psychoeducational programs such as those that teach mindfulness, are often employed to accommodate student demand. This mixed-methods study examined the effectiveness of a mindfulness program that used a multimodal approach to build skills over the course of 8 weeks. Findings suggest the program was effective at reducing chronic stress and anxiety, as well as increasing resilience and problem-focused coping. Further, students reported the program had a positive impact on their lives by increasing their sense of wellbeing and providing new ways to adapt successfully to daily stressors. Breathing exercises, guided meditation, and peer discussion were found to be particularly helpful. A comprehensive mindfulness program which utilizes multiple modalities may serve a larger range of students by tapping into personal relevance while providing the same benefits found in singular approach programs.
